Boston home prices hit 7-year high despite nationwide slowdown

Boston Business Journal
by: Craig Douglas

Boston-area home prices increased by 7 percent on a year-over-year basis in June and reached a level not seen since late 2006, according to the latest S&P/Case-Shiller report.

The local region's price appreciation outpaced the national average of 6.2 percent for the 12-month period that ended June 30, although it lagged many of the country's larger home markets that were particularly hard-hit by the recent housing downturn and subsequent recession. To be sure, speculators are back in force in some of the very same markets — Las Vegas (up 15.2 percent), Miami (11.5 percent) and Los Angeles (10.5 percent), in particular — that saw the steepest price depreciation as the past decade's housing bubble deflated.
